Whitworth/Kandel (the English version of the report can be found below the German text after the last photo ⇓) – Eine Gruppe von 12 Personen aus Kandel war zu Gast in Whitworth, um die langjährige Städtepartnerschaft zu feiern. Die Besucher wurden vom Whitworth Town Twinning Committee herzlich empfangen und verbrachten vier Tage in der Stadt.

Eine der ältesten Städtepartnerschaften in der Region

Die Städtepartnerschaft zwischen Whitworth und Kandel besteht seit 1966 und ist eine der ältesten in der Region. Sie wurde bei einer Feierstunde in Kandel am 6. August 1966 offiziell besiegelt, als die Partnerschaftsurkunde vom Vorsitzenden des Stadtbezirksrats von Whitworth, Ratsmitglied Frank W. Walker, und dem damaligen Bürgermeister von Kandel, Oskar Böhm, unterzeichnet wurde.

Die Städtepartnerschaft wird auf Kandeler Seite vom “Verein grenzüberschreitender Freundschaften e.V.” fleißig weiter gepflegt, von Whitworther Seite vom Town Twinning Committee, das Benefizveranstaltungen organisiert, um die Bewirtung von Besuchern aus Kandel in Whitworth zu finanzieren.

Jedes Jahr besucht eine Delegation der einen Stadt die andere, und die Gastfreundschaft wird im folgenden Jahr erwidert. Im Lauf der Jahre haben auch andere lokale Gruppen, wie der Whitworth Swimming Club, ähnliche Austauschbesuche durchgeführt.

Ausflug nach Blackpool und Besuch einer Brauerei

Ein besonderes Highlight in diesem Jahr war der Ausflug nach Blackpool, wo die Besucher trotz des anfänglichen Regens einen schönen Tag am Meer verbrachten. “Bei unserer Ankunft in Blackpool regnete es in Strömen, aber im Laufe des Tages wandelte es sich in sehr schönes Wetter”, so Volker Blatsch aus Kandel. “Wir haben den Strand, den Pier und den Tower genossen und viel Spaß gehabt.”

Ein weiterer Höhepunkt war der Besuch der Bowland Brewery in Holmes Mill, wo die Gäste eine Führung durch die Brauerei erhielten und die verschiedenen Biere probieren konnten. Die Bowland Brewery stellt eine Reihe von Fassbieren her, die von der außergewöhnlich schönen Landschaft von Bowland inspiriert sind.

“Unsere Ales Of Outstanding Natural Beauty werden direkt hier unter dem Schornstein in Holmes Mill gebraut”, erklärte ein Mitarbeiter der Brauerei. “Gleich hinter unserer berühmten Bierhalle stellt ein engagiertes Team handwerklicher Brauer Biere wie ‘Hen Harrier’, ‘Boxer Blonde’ und ‘Pheasant Plucker’ her.”

Das Logo und die Verwaltung von Whitworth

Die Gäste aus Kandel lernten auch wieder etliches über die Geschichte und das Logo von Whitworth kennen. Das Logo der Stadtverwaltung von Whitworth ist ein goldener Stierkopf in einem marineblauen Kreis, der von einem himmelblauen Gürtel umgeben ist. Der Stierkopf symbolisiert die Landwirtschaft und den Handel, während der Gürtel für Einheit und Zusammenhalt steht.

In Whitworth werden die kommunalen Dienstleistungen von drei lokalen Behörden erbracht – dem Whitworth Town Council, dem Rossendale Borough Council und dem Lancashire County Council. Der Stadtrat von Whitworth besteht aus 12 gewählten Mitgliedern (Ratsmitgliedern), die von einem Stadtschreiber unterstützt werden. Das Leitbild des Stadtrats von Whitworth lautet: “Verbesserung der Lebensqualität in der Gemeinde Whitworth”. Die Büros des Stadtrats und der Ratssaal befinden sich in der Civic Hall in Whitworth.

Der Stadtrat von Whitworth wurde im Jahr 2006 mit dem Qualitätsstatus ausgezeichnet und im Jahr 2011 erneut akkreditiert. Der Status gibt Partnerräten und anderen Organisationen die Gewissheit, dass der Stadtrat den Einwohnern der Stadt hervorragende Dienstleistungen und ein gutes Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis bieten kann.

Freundschaftliche Beziehungen gehen weiter

Der Vorsitzende des Whitworth Town Twinning Committee, Jim Mellor, sagte: “Wir freuen uns sehr, unsere Freunde aus Kandel wiederzusehen und ihnen unsere schöne Stadt und Umgebung zu zeigen. Die Städtepartnerschaft ist eine wunderbare Möglichkeit, grenzüberschreitende Freundschaften zu pflegen und voneinander zu lernen.”

Die nächste Begegnung ist für 2024 geplant, wenn eine Delegation aus Whitworth nach Kandel reisen wird. „Es wäre es wünschenswert, dass sich am Austausch bei den Erwachsenen noch mehr Kandeler beteiligen würden“, sagt die 2. Vorsitzende des Vereins grenzüberschreitender Freundschaften, Elke Getto. „Es ist Zeit für einen Generationenwechsel damit wir die Besuche weiterhin so durchführen können.“

Friendship across borders: Whitworth welcomes visitors from Kandel

Whitworth/Kandel – A group of 12 people from Kandel visited Whitworth to celebrate the long-standing town twinning. The visitors were warmly welcomed by the Whitworth Town Twinning Committee and spent four days in the town.

One of the oldest town twinnings in the region

The town twinning between Whitworth and Kandel has existed since 1966 and is one of the oldest in the region. It was officially sealed at a ceremony in Kandel on August 6, 1966, when the partnership certificate was signed by the chairman of the Whitworth Urban District Council, Councillor Frank W. Walker, and the then mayor of Kandel, Oskar Böhm.

The town twinning is diligently maintained on the Kandel side by the “Association for Cross-Border Friendships e.V.”, and on the Whitworth side by the Town Twinning Committee, which organizes fundraising events to finance the hospitality of visitors from Kandel in Whitworth.

Every year, a delegation from one town visits the other, and the hospitality is reciprocated the following year. Over the years other local groups, such as the Whitworth Swimming Club, have also carried out similar exchange visits.

Trip to Blackpool and visit to a brewery

A special highlight this year was the trip to Blackpool, where the visitors enjoyed a beautiful day at the seaside despite the initial rain. “When we arrived in Blackpool it was pouring rain, but during the day it turned into very nice weather,” said Volker Blatsch from Kandel. “We enjoyed the beach, the pier and the tower and had a lot of fun.”

Another highlight was the visit to the Bowland Brewery in Holmes Mill, where the guests were given a tour of the brewery and could taste the different beers. The Bowland Brewery produces a range of cask ales inspired by the exceptionally beautiful landscape of Bowland.

“Our Ales Of Outstanding Natural Beauty are brewed right here under the chimney in Holmes Mill,” explained a staff member of the brewery. “Just behind our famous Beer Hall, a dedicated team of artisan brewers make beers like ‘Hen Harrier’, ‘Boxer Blonde’ and ‘Pheasant Plucker’.”

The logo and administration of Whitworth

The guests from Kandel also learned again about the history and logo of Whitworth. The logo of Whitworth Town Council is a golden bull’s head in a navy blue circle, surrounded by a sky blue belt. The bull’s head symbolizes agriculture and trade, while the belt stands for unity and cohesion.

In Whitworth, municipal services are provided by three local authorities – Whitworth Town Council, Rossendale Borough Council and Lancashire County Council. The Whitworth Town Council consists of 12 elected members (councillors), supported by a town clerk. The mission statement of Whitworth Town Council is: “Improving quality of life in the community of Whitworth”. The offices of the town council and council chamber are located in Civic Hall in Whitworth.

Whitworth Town Council was awarded Quality Status in 2006 and re-accredited in 2011. The status gives partner councils and other organizations confidence, that the town council can provide excellent services and value for money to residents of the town.

Friendly relations continue

The chairman of Whitworth Town Twinning Committee, Jim Mellor, said: “We are delighted to see our friends from Kandel again and show them our beautiful town and surroundings. The town twinning is a wonderful way to foster cross-border friendships and learn from each other.”

The next meeting is planned for 2024, when a delegation from Whitworth will travel to Kandel. “It would be desirable that more Kandeler adults would participate in the exchange,” says the 2. chairwoman of the Association for Cross-Border Friendships, Elke Getto. “It is time for a generational change, so that we can continue to carry out the visits in this way.” (cli)
